I take it that nobody is going to put fast lenses on a D then, according to the same standards you are making up. What indoor sports are you shooting at mm equivalent? Indoor wildlife? Doesn't sound much like wildlife to me. Also what combo are you using instead that is faster with better ISO performance?

As for the rest of the argument, I will borrow Tony and Chelsea's first three minutes of the review to do the argument. Mainly because they are far too large for the body size of the camera nevermind very expensive though obviously outstanding. One of the a strengths is that it is small enough so that with a moderate kit it encourages mobility especially important for video and the balance with FF lenses way off.

And that mm GMaster lens loses its purpose on a crop frame. More weather sealed also, fits the mobile nature of the camera. I agree with you both a little. I don't think full frame lenses should be written off but on the other hand Nikon and especially Canon's affordable lenses are better than Sony's. The Canon IS kit lens is better than either the Sony or even of you get a good copy.

In some ways the Canon kit lens outperforms The mm ZA. The Canon mm is truly a bargain and sharp right up to mm, that lens really bucked the trend for affordable teles being crap at the long end and it's even better with the latest STM version. The equivalent Sony mm is not bad if you get a good one but lacks the reach and is significantly more expensive.

The EF-S mm is a cracker. The EF-S mm is cheaper and optically as good as if not better than the Sony equivalent. Then you have Canon full frame lenses like the 40mm 2. The Sony F4 G is a good lens but several hundred more than the Canon equivalent. You're left choosing between the thoroughly average or the overpriced G. With Canon, aside from the excellent you also have the option of the non stabilised mm f4 which while lacking stabilisation costs less than half the price of the Sony G and costs less than the Sony mm!!

I really like Sony sensors and bodies a lot but Canon have a lot more in the way of affordable high quality lenses. Sony's 20mm costs twice the price and not even half as good.

I agree with you on the mm front also. I don't expect Sony to be able to compete with Canon on price overall but they sometimes fail to compete on quality too which is the more annoying part. Sony has always seem to think they can charge what ever they want. Their lens collection and price has long been criticised while canon and nikon constantly percent use with better value solution as a system. Very sad!!

But there are plenty people who will just buy a body with the kit lens or two. For those people low price body like A offers a lot for little money. Canon lenses are often cheaper than Sony's because they are old and have been on the market for a long time.

And it sure does get old listening to canon shooters banging on about how good they are. Nobody else thinks that much of them. Have you looked at the MTFs?

Only a handful of Canon lenses are up to the level of the best Sony lenses and the G-master optics are in a class of their own. GM lenses could be best lenses ever made, but those aren't one or the type of lenses in question here.

Not everyone can afford to spend that much money on lenses! Weird though as I switched from Canon last year and have zero regrets. Nothing wrong with Canon, just prefer the output I'm getting today. With these lenses, as examples, the photo quality will be superb. It would be interesting with a kit lens. I've enjoyed pictures from the hike, really nice "real world" case scenario for any lens used.

Just wondering if the rendering of the galleries is somewhat substandard. When I compare my gallery pictures on my computer with what is shown on DPR, I'm always disappointed with the later.

Maybe that is a culprit provoking so many negative comments on pictures as they are displayed? Thanks Richard. Are you seeing a difference when you compare the original downloaded images? Barney, At original they are the same so most likely it is a scaling issue. It is impossible to tell how many viewers base their conclusions on "fit to page" size and not on original size.

OK, thanks for the feedback. I believe it does. Here are some from IR, also with G lens. It looked a bit better but nothing screams quality in those images.

I think the G lens can not resolve the small pixels from the apsc sensor while it might be ok for a FF which is what its design for. Pixel pitch on A and, say A7Rii, aren't dramatically different: A is about 3. The images shot at ISO are terrible, so I am really wondering why people are carrying on about this camera's low light abilities. It is average at best. Sorry maybe I was too rude with a The beach picture at the top of this list is almost fuzzy looking on my spot sharp iMac Wanted to like this camera so much I wouldn't say fuzzy, but its a far cry from being very sharp.

Considering its from a G lens and the price, this photo sample is really screaming "Don't get this lens on the A". Why these pictures are not credible? They are for me, much more than overprocessed in PP. In my view A is aimed pariculary on videoplayers, it offers nothing important for me as still shooter and for the doube price of A Much better deal.

I do not judge and rate this shots as artistic images, I just look at rendering and see nothing that impress me more than what I see in A images. I do not need to see new galleries with better processed files in PP, these are enough to see for me that A sensor offers nothing particular what A does. Don't limit your decision on just dpr for this camera. I've seen great images taken on a number of other sites that were invited to Miami.

I'm not really sure why but images on dpr all look flat and very point and shootish from every camera they have so probably just something to do with the website versus actual photo results. I've seen photos at iso that look much better than a photos at And video can be found on youtube as well and its p looks much better.

I would happily buy this camera if it didn't cost an arm and a leg, at almost euros it's a bit steep. But love the fluid smooth and fast AF system on this puppy. Where in the world do you have to pay euros?

Sweden, where our high taxes makes prices skyrocket. I have seen prices above euros with a lens. But average price here is around to euros. Even in physical stores btw. Suave You know, I'd love to see if you'd actually say 'pathetic' to the faces of the guys who took the shots. I'm betting on a fat 'No'. Hope to see some direct comparison with the A When will the A available in the Studio shot comparison? I have A and looking forward to upgrade if the image quality is improved.

So far, I don't see any obvious or "wow" improvement except auto-focus. All that makes this camera is the excellent AF system it contains. The 24 mpix sensor is long time overdue, it "grains" already at ISO, what is hilarious, so no real progression in this direction. I really think that Nikon did the right thing this time. Pixel peeping is over, Sony.

And yes, this is brand new sensor tech, nearly reproducing the main benefit of BSI more light to the sensor at probably a lower cost.

Besides, all of your "innovation" has been done before, with varying degrees of success. Looking for best midrange camera of my personal choice, but will have to wait long : 1.

Sony A58 : Translucent mirror technology, sensor not getting full lights. Sony A : Most popular but for me kit lens not good, pictures are in dull colors and huge barrel distortion as I saw sample from users. Body not like DSLR. But Pictures are not as sharp as Nikon D low pass filter issue. Also HDR and battery issue.

Nikon D : Over all the best, but very slow in live view and mediocre fps. So far that not seems possible in near future. AD not as "sharp" with best lenses for both as the D due to AA filter? I would love to see that. Any link? But it is a mirrorless not DSLR. Unless you're shooting video, go for the D If you're shooting video, go A Incredible AF in video and photo, lightweight and small, and very good photo IQ. Unless you're shooting JPG, you don't have to worry about "dull" colors.

Battery life is limited, but spare batteries are small and cheap. If you're well into video, you really should consider the A and its slew of pro video features. The only advantages the A58 will have are battery life and a few more controls. But I will have to compromise with live view shooting. Does anybody else think the RX IV takes better photos? I know people will say "no way I just think the combo of the better color and the super sharp lens gives better looking photos. No comparison, the A wins across the board in everything but video, and the A will arrive later this week to resolve that.

Judging from other sites' A photos, there must have been something wrong with DPR's camera. The other sites' are quite consistent with contrast, saturation, and sharpness, with DPR's photos being the odd one out. I see lots of mixed reviews about this lens. It sounds to me like a quality control issue, but even if you get a good copy it is very expensive. The main problem I am having with this camera is, that it's aiming more and more towards video, but doesn't offer a headphone jack.

This would be an essential feature for more serious filming. I have gone through the comments posted by readers on all the major camera related websites.

I have noticed the following common things : 1. No camera is perfect. People like to commend the cameras from small or not so popular manufacturers, but they actually own cameras from leading companies. If the camera companies would stop artificially holding back features, people would stop complaining that they're doing it.

This looks like a nice camera, but I'm not sure why you bothered because you can't seem to offer a kit lens that I can use with it that isn't complete crap. If the idea was for me to purchase bulky and costly FE lenses, then you really have completely lost the plot. What nonsense! Sony builds some excellent lenses, especially apparently the new G models.

Sadly, there just aren't enough of them. There would be no difference in images between this and the Nikon D with the kit lens WRT the G lenses Why would one pay so much to use a FF lens but same results as apsc lens? There are many good apsc lenses now. If you compare it to for example m43 options where people always claim the glass is much better it just doesn't work for me.

The first results seem to hint that the a is about 1 stop cleaner and sharper as the a so lets see some more results. Why not compare it to Fuji and the now uncertain Samsung. Both have some high quality zoom. Too bad there's no other lens' whatsoever that you can purchase that fit this camera Yes that is true for most kit lenses. Much hate for the mm kit lens! But it seems it is being rated for not being something other than what it is.

It is a very useful walk around lens. As it collapses to a pancake it means the camera can fit in a coat pocket. Aside from that in the ish range it is quite useable. It is, as you said. But not even remotely comparable to other similar flat power zooms, for image quality, especially the Samsung What a shame!

Maybe so, I have no direct experience of other kit lenses beyond Canon the kit that came with the 30D I used once—literally, and later gave it away so the Samsung may be much better but it is has less range and no stabilisation. Everything has its trade-offs. Meanwhile the is, according to DxO Mark: for the a it is one of the best all-round performers Maybe there is a bit of quality variation? My quibble with the Samsung is that it does not go wide enough for me and there is no adapter to the e-mount.

Samsung also has a PZ. Here is my test A7 kit and Samsung PZ kit test. The PZ match the A7 kit in center sharpness and outshine it at the edge. ChuckTa That does look interesting. But is there an adapter from Samsung NX to Sony e-mount? A is close to an ideal walk around lens range for me bushwalking amatuer. I have pretty much given up on Sony building a higher spec version of their as it probably keeps the price of the package down—and possibly encourages people to buy their pricey primes?

Is the Samsung PZ stabilised? The Optical Steady Shot on the Sony is a useful feature—especially for old breathless walkers The Samsung adapters were offered just as examples of what CAN be attained Sony had the opportunity to give us a much sharper kit zoom but didn't. That is the shame of it. Most other kit zooms are much better, too. This comment was made to DxO:. A lot of people are buying the used, nowadays, to avoid the powerzoom feature on the You guys really need to test this, so a comparison between the and the can be made.

When the NEX-6 first came out I got the kit with the and purchased the separately on eBay so I had the opportunity to compare them. The was sharper so I sold the When the A came out I did the same, but this time to my surprise the was worse than the ! Wasn't happy with either, and the only other option was the Zeis which has mixed reviews not to mention being very expensive.

So returned the A and got an RXM3, which has a much better lens. I liked the idea of a large sensor where I could use a basic kit zoom for my general photography but also add a fast prime or two e. But I'm shocked to see after all this time Sony hasn't addressed the quality of their APS-C e-mount kit zooms and while this situation exists I can't seriously consider them.

I have both the and the on an a and, with the samples I have, the is the better lens. It is still not very good but it is very useful. I use it as my walk-around lens and find that from around 20mm to just under 50mm it performs OK. My main reason for using it is its compact size and speed of finding focus. It would be nice to have something with the same focal range but of a good quality but I think that is a price thing, in the first place they want to keep the camera and kit lens package cheap and bang for your buck it is a pretty good deal but also I think they figure that if you are serious you will buy their better but more expensive lenses.

I agree it is a pity that Sony doesn't offer an alternative upscaled package with a GOOD or thereabouts as it is a good focal range for the camera. If we make enough noise in the forums maybe they will take note? For a short time after the NEX-7 was introduced, up until the time of the flooding which destroyed the Sony factory in Thailand, the N7 was supplied with a higher quality made in Japan.

I have both versions, and this lens is clearly superior due to, I believe, better glass. There are a few, reliable lenses for the Sony APS-C, but again, in all fairness to these buyers, there really should be a lot more. Image 8 is an example, possibly motion blur Some are bad and some are OK. It's mostly due to sample variance. Yeah, the FE is pretty bad at the corners, I've done a test on that.

But how is the FE great on the A? DXO shows it only gets 8mp sharpness on the A, hardly call great and same as any other kit lens.

I don't see a point of using it on an apsc camera. I use one with a NEX-7 a lot, and it's wonderful for a zoom.

Others have commented the same. Not really the 'best' zooms get about 9mp of sharpness on dxo sel, sel,sel With sel being the best in tests and real use but its FE. The only gets about 6mp. Most of the primes get about 13mp for example the cheap sel50f1. Optically, this is one of the worst zooms released in the digital era. When I'm saying "one of" I'm actually thinking "possibly the worst, but I haven't seen reviews of everything".

So the FE kit can hardly be call excellent. The zooms all get about 8mp sharpness. The is 'poor' but what can one expect? However, it performs way better - similarly to the good non-collapsing cheap zooms e. Nikon That's exactly what I would expect. And whatever might be a step off in IQ can usually be perfected in post.

I'm a dedicated Canon user -mostly for stills until about a year ago. I've never owned a Sony, but I'll scoop one of these up in a heartbeat if it's the only show in town for these features, and price. What a bunch of whiners! My guess is sony also supplied all the a for testing with a z instead of the so thats what you get.

Since the z will now also be sold as part of the a kit already sold out in europe it seems it makes sense to give that to reviewers. Nothing out of the ordinary. The top right corner looks absolutely atrocious, I sure hope that isn't typical performance of that lens - yikes! Sure, the A functions perfectly well with its conventional controls, but the ability to tap a focus point or use touch gestures during playback would making the camera even easier to use.

The outgoing A can currently be had for around half the price, whether body-only or bundled with the same mm stabilised kit lens. However both these cameras thrash the A on battery life.
